In the Eyes of an Owl
On 2/16/13 During my February bird walk (alone) I observed a few American Crows yelling into a tree. As I stood there watching and trying to find what they were yelling at, a large bird flew from inside the tree. I saw the direction where the bird went, but couldn't find it anywhere. I stood there scanning all the trees with my binoculars (for like 4hrs..lol) and there it was A Great Horned Owl sitting on a nest. (I didn't realize she was on a nest) This location is a secret so please don't ask me where.
It was starting to snow so I set up my tripod and my camera with the 500mm lens and took a few photos. I was so excited to see this and share my photo of my find. I put the photo up on Facebook (not realizing she was on a nest). Never giving the location I went back a few weeks later as it was warbler season and the migration of birds brings the migration of birders..lol.
On 3/30/13 I spotted a white fuzzball in the tree. It was a baby!! I have never seen Great Horned Owl babies. And let me tell you. They are adorable, But I thought there would be more than 1 in the nest so I had to look it up and see how many they had in a clutch.
Of course being discreet and not hanging around. I left so no one would see me.
On 4/07/13 I saw 2 babies in the nest and was so excited to see 2 of them there. Took a photo and left. LOL (Bird watcher's everywhere) I didn't want these birds to be disturbed as they are protected and it's not every day that you see them as young and in a nest.
A little under a month later I went back on 5/02/13 and couldn't find any Owls and scanned the trees again and when I looked up and saw one of the young on a branch near the nest, I was amazed at how well they blend with the bark of the tree, because I looked at that tree a couple of times and never saw the bird there. I was trying not no bring attention to this Owl knowing there were Red Tail Hawks and Crows around, because when they do spot them. They attack them. And I didn't want to see that so I left.

About a week later i was looking for the young Owls and didn't see them right away. I was worried that they may have been killed(by a raccoon I saw days before). They had fledged away from the nest and I found them once again. The photo above is the younger of the 2 Great Horned Owlets.
The photo below is the older one (by a week).

The Pileated Woodpecker is one of my favorite birds. It's always exciting to see them going tree to tree. Sometimes when I look for other birds, I hear them around and the sound gets my attention and I forget about the bird I just saw and head towards the woodpecker. When they are looking for carpenter ants it sounds like a loud hammering through out the trees. They are the size of a American Crow (just for an idea of how big they are). These photographs were taken in Lincoln Woods state park in Lincoln.R.I. on 3/09/13

In Plain Site
First time I saw this Owl I couldn't be more amazed at how well it was hiding and how beautiful it was. I have watched these birds for a few years and have seen 2 Owlets from the pair. What a site to see them in the wild.
I respect them and there hiding spots,But love to photograph them. I haven't seen the red phase for about a year, but the grey one is still hanging around. And I'm happy that it's there.
Alot of peope do not realize how much wildlife is in Rhode Island. Every time I see walkers they always ask me "are you a profesional? Do you work for a news paper?"
My responce is always "no it's a hobby and theres a bird"..lol

This feeling is amazing
One day I was sitting in my car near the Seekonk river watching the seagles, all of a sudden they went up and went back down.I thaught to myself "there must be a hawk", Then i herd the geese start to panic. Grabed my camera, steped out of the car and said "thats an Eagle" looked to my left and there it was.
This has to be by far the most exciting picture I have ever taken. I took 19 picture series of this Eagle flying over me and was amazed by the way it flew upside down over me.
I have only seen this maneuver when they are courting. I think it was showing off..lol

Buzzing around
This is probably one of the hardest birds to photograph.
I was leaning against my car when one flew by. I looked around to see where it went, then I saw it buzzing in the bed of flowers. I think I took like 100 shots before it took off and disappeared into the green background. Sometimes I hear buzzing around my ears in the spring, and I have to look before I swat my hands (witch I never do anyway) incase it's a humming bird and not a bee..lol
I'm so happy I got a couple of good pictures of this little bird.
